Meet Dr. Williams

George A. Williams, M.D. is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist at Associated Retinal Consultants, serving patients in southeast Michigan. He specializes in vitreoretinal diseases.

Dr. Williams is Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology and Director of the Beaumont Eye Institute. He is Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and is Professor at the European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology in Lugano, Switzerland. He is an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and completed his residency in ophthalmology and his fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Williams has published more than 300 articles and book chapters in the field of vitreoretinal diseases and surgery. He has participated as principal investigator or co-investigator in more than 30 clinical trials sponsored by the National Eye Institute and industry. He is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). He has delivered 25 named lectureships throughout the world.

Dr. Williams served as AAO President in 2019 and currently is Senior Secretary for Advocacy. He was Secretary for Federal Affairs from 2014 through 2017. From 2006-2018, he represented the AAO at the Relative Value Update Committee (RUC) of the American Medical Association. He was Chair of the Board of Directors of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company from 2016-2019.

He is an Associate Editor for Surgical Techniques for the journal RETINA,. Dr. Williams is a recertified Diplomate (2005, 2016) of the American Board of Ophthalmology and an elected Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
